Life's milestone and memorabilia

Last week, I put up a post about growth and why it is necessary to start growing instead of always seeking an escape from challenges and opportunities to grow.  I forgot to mention that you can, and you should take breaks especially when you feel overwhelmed, but don't run away from anything that can cause you to grow.

Since I started talking about growth in my last post, I touched on something people make mention of time after time and this is my thought on it. These are the things that signify growth (milestones and memorabilia). Milestones are important events that are significant in the development of someone or something. Memorabilia are things worth remembering, they are what I call portals to the past, things that ground you to certain memories, places or events and help you travel back in time whenever you want to.

Different people will have different milestones. Now excluding developmental milestones (about the growth of the physical individual), every individual has different things they consider as milestones based on what they prioritize or consider important. I mean, we all have different paths in life with different dreams and goals, and we go about this in completely different ways.

Everyone reaches life’s milestones at different times.
Consider two babies delivered at the same time and try to compare their growth and development. You would see that they won’t start sitting, talking or walking, and it is so unfair to say that one child is late. This is the general principle of life. Just because you started together with someone doesn’t mean you will continue together at the same pace. So here is the permission to allow yourself to reach whatever milestone you want at whatever time is right for you. Don’t feel bad that people are going ahead of you, or they have reached that level of achievement before you. Your path might never take you there, but you are always right on time, no matter when.

Does everyone decide which milestone is worth celebrating? Have ever met someone that doesn’t celebrate the seemingly big things like a promotion or a thousand subscribers but would celebrate the small things like two weeks of consistency? We all get to decide how important each milestone is to us and how we go about celebrating it. You can go on ahead to check a box on your checklist or get together with friends and paint the town red. If you don’t want to celebrate any of the milestones then, no problem. You get to decide and don’t let someone make that decision for you.

Life’s milestones and memorabilia. What takes you back to certain moments and achievements? Do you keep pictures of those days or buy books that get tied to certain memories? Do you ever point at items in your room and tell someone you got it that year when something nice different happened? Do you collect memorabilia from different places, people and times? I think it is a beautiful idea to have something that ties you to a specific milestone.

What can you consider memorabilia?
The commonest thing people collect is pictures. There is always a picture for every stage of life, and it is getting easier to take pictures and save them. Pictures preserve memories. I mean, you can always tell the story surrounding a particular picture you took, and you return to that moment, long enough for the nostalgia to hit. What if you don’t like pictures? Well, you can collect music and make life a mixtape. Create a playlist for different days and people. There is also the option of collecting things. It can be items from the gift shops in every new place you visit, or saving things like a ticket, museum passes, or something from your favourite people that reminds you of them.

As I conclude my piece on growth, I hope you remember that growth is necessary and essential to your survival as a person, even if it is uncomfortable. Know that there are milestones in life worth looking forward to, be confident because different people have different milestones and you may reach your milestone at your pace. Don’t forget to collect memorabilia as you grow through life, they always hold you to a memory and give you a story to tell whenever you see, hear or touch them. After all, they are portals to the past.
