Balance: Independent Vs Dependent.

Image
Let me start with this, I don't like the general message of being strong and independent. Not that strong and independent is bad, but it is not something I desire. I want to make decisions that matter to me without waiting for anyone's permission, I love to do me, but I don't think I am comfortable with the word independent and its usage in this context.  Source: Pinterest Independent means “free from outside control; not subject to another's authority, not depending on another for livelihood or subsistence”. The thing is this, when I hear the phrase “strong and independent woman”, it creates an image of someone removed from the world and the surrounding people, someone that has to get everything done herself because she is too independent to rely on others. She has to carve out her path and be in total opposition to everyone. So I ask myself, does being strong and independent remove the need for a community, a support system, a family (either by choice or biological) o...

When It Was Intended To Hurt You

Image
How do you begin to deal with an experience that was at your expense, and caused you pain? You are doing alright, unbothered about what happened or believe you have let go of the pain until it hits you like a truck on the highway, and you are stuck in that moment, waiting for it to pass because you can't deal with it yet, and it won't bother you if you survive it now. The thing you forget at that moment is that it comes around often, and you are going to feel a lot worse later. So, you have to decide, do you fix it now or do you wait? When you quiet all the noise and distraction, and you remove yourself from all the avenues of escape you have created for yourself, you are left with all you have; the pain, the tears, the regrets and the things done to you that were not in any way your fault. What do you do when you face that memory? How do you deal with something whose singular purpose was to hurt you?  I am someone that talks about my experiences when I am trying to heal or ...

TDS: It's A Home Design Obsession

Image
It has been forever. Welcome back to the Dream series. This is a little something where I talk about what I want to achieve, and I put down hoping you understand my person and the reasoning to some things I do. Last time on the dream series, I talked about creating a virtual safe space for teenagers and young adults, where they can share their experiences, learn, be mentored and above all be better humans in a society like ours. You can check it out here . IT’S A HOME DESIGN OBSESSION It all started with an episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and after several home renovation shows, different home design shows and a Pinterest board dedicated to interior designs, you can say I might have a slight obsession with home designs. Source: Twitter ( @INTERIORPORN1) One of the basic human needs is shelter, a safe place to stay, and a house is shelter. Over the years, houses have grown from being just somewhere to live but something to enjoy, something pleasing, a definition of one...

Check In: January 2021

Image
Source: Pinterest      First, there is an observation I have made that maybe you would agree with me, January 2021 is the shortest yet. And it is fine. It is amazing in fact that this year seems to run out just as soon as it started, but the thought I can't shake off sometimes is just maybe I don't have enough time, whatever that means. The second thing is this, I am back in Enugu. I have been here since the 11th of January. Looking out of the window during the take-off and seeing the world become smaller till you become so insignificant is amazing. I made a friend on the flight, and we shared a taxi out of the airport, and that saved me extra money, so a win I guess. The sad part though is that I am sure I won't keep in contact with this person. Sorry though, it was fun talking with you.  Although my experience coming back has not been that perfect, it is alright. I looked for the carpenter from earlier and after wasting an entire day searching for him; I met up wit...

TCS: The Coming Of Age Experience

Image
One of the most surprising but defining moments of our lives has to be those moments we lose our childhood innocence and transition into adulthood. Too often, literary works that highlight the struggles, experience and lessons of such moments. They are most relatable to us because there is a reminder of all we had to learn to be who we are now.  Welcome to the first season of The Conversation series, I am here with a childhood friend, and we are kicking off this fantastic series with the topic titled; The Coming Of Age Experience. Let's start by getting to know who you are. Hi, my name is Ruth. Nothing much about me, I’m a student, a pharmacy student. I want a simple life and that’s all about me. This conversation touches on experiences we might have had at one point.  What was your initial thought regarding the invitation? Well, I’m most sceptical about things like this because I don’t see myself fitting in, it’s a big thing for you and me as well. I always think of mys...

Book Review: A Lineage Of Grace

Image
Hey! How has the new year been? Pretty awesome, right? And I thought of what better way to start this year than with a book review.  I got to read this book, last year after I read someone’s commentary on the book of Esther which spurred me to look for other stories or commentary about women in the bible. While I was searching for another book, I stumbled on a work of fiction by Francine Rivers(FR), “The Lineage Of Grace” .  She did a retelling of this story based on biblical accounts but filling in the outline of those stories with dialogue and helping us take a step back in time and to understand the culture and environment these women find themselves in and how they ended up being the only women mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus. Unveiled: The story of Tamar (Genesis 37:1-38:30).  She started the story by giving us a backstory of Judah. Tamar was a Canaanite married to Judah’s son, Er. She was faithful in service to her new family, to the point of embracing t...
