A Thanksgiving Special: 2020 In Retrospect

Image
It probably sounds cliché if I say I don’t know how to start this piece considering it is the one I was waiting to write. I have this tradition of writing to the year by November and writing to the next year December. However, 2020 was very much unexpected, I couldn’t have been prepared in any way for it. But then again, none of us did. Thanksgiving is my favourite holiday in the year- too bad we don’t celebrate it in Nigeria- because of its essence. The coming together of families and friends, having an atmosphere of gratitude for how the year has gone by, talking about the things you are thankful for and finally food. I decided to combine both things in this post and share. Source: Pinterest I am going to start with what I wrote this year and titled “ Project 2020 ”. I was ready to break the mould and step out of my comfort zone. I had everything sorted out; resuming clinical class, settling into a new apartment alone which was a sure comfort from the lousy ...

Black's Art Challenge III

Image
It has been a while since the last art challenge. Today, we are doing something along the lines of abstract art. A Lil Bit Abstract      This is an attempt of understanding what exists  in the innerverse of an artist, an attempt in portraying something we tend to overlook.  I hope to explain the drawing right in front of you. Culture Vile, despicable, maybe it needs a pop of colour was the first thing that came up in my mind. The first two words are mostly in line with what I presume the drawing represents and maybe there is something about the distorted proportion the drawing has or the grotesque feel it leaves that I find rather unsettling.  The next thing that came to mind was a question. Why is there something a bit twisted in his mind? The most prominent element of the drawing is a half-naked woman with what appears to be a ram to her left and faces separated by a talking drum on her right. Now that we know what is in the drawing, it is easier to unde...

Moving On: Learning from My Healing Journey

Image
I already mentioned what a heartbreak is and why you would need to heal from it in an earlier post  Moving on: Healing a Broken Heart . While the things I mentioned in the earlier post are mainly from books I have read and other people’s experience. At the time of that post, I was going on that journey myself, I have decided to post an update now that I have a bit more insight and understanding of moving on. Source: Pinterest So what have I learnt from my healing journey, In healing, the most important person is you. If you don’t take time to heal from whatever has hurt you, it will affect your relationship with other people. Distracting yourself from whatever happened or refusing to deal with what hurt you will cost you more in the long run. Healing starts when you hold yourself accountable for your actions and begin to forgive yourself for all the mistakes and errors you made on the way. Forgiving myself helped me let go of the offence and helped me forgive ev...

An Illusion of freedom

Image
Source: Pinterest I am going to assume you must have heard, things are not the way they seem. This means what we accept as the truth is often an illusion and until we change our perspective we might never know the truth. One of such illusions is freedom, we believe we are free because we can do what we choose to and we are not under any clear oppression and until we look closer, we likely get away with believing it. I read a quote somewhere and it goes like this,  What is worse than a bird in a cage? A bird in a bigger cage because it believes it is free.  Freedom is the state of being free; not being imprisoned or enslaved and assured liberty. It is the power or right to act, speak or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint and the absence of a despotic government. Our fundamental human right embodies freedom and it is an integral part of who we are even if such freedom is often within limits and is supposed to be protected by the laws and government of a reg...

Good Things Fall Apart

Image
Have you ever had a beautiful friendship come to a halt after a long time apart without prior disagreement or dispute but everything seems to have fallen apart and you are just another familiar face in the crowd? Maybe it was with someone you consider as your significant other but you can't point out any wrongdoing instead all the memories of the times spent together brings a smile to your face and all you can remember is the joy and happiness around? Are you like me, jumping into this with the resolve to fix and piece everything back to the way it was because of a preconceived notion that if something is good, it is supposed to last forever without much regard to the external factors and the other person? I took two weeks off social media and people in an attempt to declutter my headspace and as an escape from the constant news that is overwhelming and maybe a bit triggering to me. I am currently learning about forgiveness at Transformation Church, going through my ...

The Tragedy Of The Nigerian Story

Image
I remember during my secondary school days, there was a drama competition at the National theatre in 2014 to celebrate Nigeria at 100. The theme was, “A hundred years of existence: the story so far”. In that production, there was a revealing of the problems that plagued the Nigerian society ranging from electricity to security to government embezzling all the funds, somehow it has only gotten worse. Looking back at that story and being aware of where we are now, I have decided to do a piece to discuss the situation of things right now. Source: Twitter Taking a step back, let me introduce Nigeria.  In 1914, under the authority of  Lord Frederick Lugard, the Southern Nigeria Protectorate and the Northern Nigeria Protectorate was amalgamated to form the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria. By the late 1950s, there was a call for Independence which was granted on the First of October 1960 to form the Federation of Nigeria under the rule of Queen Elizabeth II with Nnamdi Azikiwe ...

To the things I find beautiful

Image
This is an appreciative post to some of the things that make me stop and leave me spellbound, all the things that evoked intense interest in me and everything I find beautiful. Colours Source: Pinterest      Bright, bursting, overwhelming, gentle, calming, peaceful and ethereal are all the words I will use to describe colours. The colours everywhere is one of the things that get me drawn into my every day, in painting, in nature, in pictures and so on. And the fact that colours appear different in respect to time, like the city view at night lit up by the streetlamps and reflection on moving cars and glass creates such a surreal environment. The most amazing display of colour for me would always be sunrise or sunset. I can't count how many times I wake up so early just to see the sunrise. Travels and Road trips Source: Pinterest     While I don't get to do this often because of schooling, I enjoy travelling by any means possible. Although I f...
